Melaka in Photos
Have you ever been surprised by a place? I recently returned from my longest journey of the year, I planned a trip from Singapore up the coast of peninsular Malaysia through to my home in Thailand. When putting together a longer itinerary some destinations get lost in the shuffle and logistics. I have to say that this time around that happened for me in Malacca or Melaka. This city has a rich history, and I was excited to go there, but it wasn't a huge focus on my itinerary. It’s a lovely blend of European and Asian influences. The whole town has a very relaxed vibe amongst a beautiful backdrop and feels a little bit frozen in time. Melaka just has a feeling about it, the kind where you know in 10 years you'll look back and think "Remember that time in Melaka?"
It's very easy to get to, it's on the main trail when heading up the Malaysian coast and it was made a UNESCO World Heritage Site in July 2008. I arrived there by bus from Singapore, and left by bus to head to Kuala Lumpur. While it is no secret to tourism, and of course, when there you'll find all the wonderful touristy things to do and see. Like the “tower of Melaka (that is a must do, such a stunning view) and even has a Hard Rock Cafe beside the ever famous Jonker Walk Night Market. The traditional shop houses win you over though, and taking a river cruise by the painted buildings is a great way to see them.
This is a place where you can relax, and walk around, and take in the feeling. Visit the cemetery on the hill and think of the travellers that came here a hundred years ago, what they were looking for, what they saw. About what brought you here and why you travel.
If you want a place where you can slow down and take it all in, then in Melaka you're in the right place.
