A hidden gem of a Wateringhole, Viva

Any trip to Bangkok is not complete without a visit to the Chatuchak Weekend Market (Also known as the JJ Market) With over 5000 stalls this is the largest market in all of Thailand.¹ I found myself there on another weekend getting my shopping done.  On first walk by of Viva, I felt like I was in Cuba. The Latin music was playing , the mood was happy, expats, tourists and locals alike were enjoying themselves. There was a live DJ at the booth drinking a beer, this stall stood out among the hundreds of others that I had already walked by that day that were selling their food, clothing, kitsch or anything that had a value that was a good price in Thailand. It felt almost removed, like it’s own entity.

I was off to get my shopping done and passed by again, this time Katy Perry was the artist up, and again I seemed to be drawn to the atmosphere.  Very simple in set up, it had a great feeling with wooden floors and pillars, crates for tables, animal hide stools, and gorgeous chandeliers to set the ambiance.  This was definitely not your typical stall with the little plastic stools.

With Beers at about $5 and cocktails ranging around $6 each, this is not the place to find the bargains that Chatuchak is famous for.  The prompt service, great drinks and lovely atmosphere draws you in.  Any weary shopper would be happy to have stopped by after making their way through the tiny soi's
